HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. — Words of inspiration in Wednesday night's inauguration celebration as millions heard Vanderbilt soccer player Sarah Fuller introduce Vice President Kamala Harris.

Hernando High School basketball player, Marissa Foulks said, “Her as a female becoming a football player is awesome to me.”

Foulks, who's the Lady Leopards captain, said she’s never felt so inspired.

“Sarah Fuller being a soccer player and then she was the first women in a Power 5 league to score on a football team — I mean that’s awesome,” she expressed. “She’s a woman, I mean there’s no saying that a woman can do that but she just did.”

Foulks said that rather than seeing gender roles in sports, she sees hard work and determination.

“I’ve had comments made to me like, you’re just a girl, you’re not that good, I’m better than you, like yeah of course. I mean, it’s always going to happen but I never let that negativity affect me. I use that negativity to push myself even more.”

Foulks joined the millions who watched Sarah Fuller introduce the country’s first female vice president. She told Spectrum Bay News 9’s Katya Guillaume that Fuller’s inspiring story is her hope as she takes her talent to the next level.

“I never saw this coming and as Sarah Fuller she just pushes herself to be the best she can be,” she said. And that is something Foulks is aiming for as well.
