NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — A man was injured in a shooting involving Pasco County Sheriff's deputies Friday morning after a burglary attempt near Little Road.

No deputies were injured in the incident, which took place just after 8 a.m.

Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco said the man, 38-year-old Scott Youmans, charged at deputies with a knife after they arrived on the scene. Three deputies fired their weapons and Taser at Youmans.

While the deputies rendered aid to the suspect, he told them "thank you," Nocco said, adding that the man likely wanted them to shoot him. Nocco said the suspect had an extensive mental health history.

The sheriff said the incident started when the suspect tried to break into a gun store on Little Road and a witness saw him.

After a 911 call was placed, multiple deputies responded to the scene and spotted Youmans moments later.

Nocco said as deputies approached Youmans, the suspect pulled out a knife. After multiple attempts to de-escalate the situation, the suspect charged deputies and was shot, according to Nocco.

Youmans, who was charged with attempted burglary and aggravated assault on a law enforecement officer, was taken to an area hospital where he required surgery.

His condition was not released.

Nocco said the three deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is routine in a law enforement shooting.

"The deputies did everything in their power to de-escalate the situation," Nocco said. "He (Youmans) would not allow us to assist them."
