Halloween: Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has offered some tips to help families and their children stay safe while enjoying Halloween festivities.

HALLOWEEN HISTORY

The earliest known use of the word "Halloween" was in the 16th century. It was spelled "Hallowe'en," a Scottish variant of "All Hallows Eve," the night before "All Hallows Day" (Nov. 1), better known today as "All Saints Day."

Western Christians commemorate the dead on "All Souls' Day" Nov. 2.

In Mexican and Latin America, this coincides with Dia De Muertos (Day of the Dead).

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

Trick-or-Treating

  • Plan your route ahead of time. This will give you an idea how far you'll to walk, and where older children going alone will be.
  • Go trick-or-treating with neighbors and friends. It's safer than going alone.
  • Some malls and stores offer safe trick-or-treating alternatives.
  • Make sure trick-or-treaters eat before going out, so they won't be tempted to eat candy while trick-or-treating.
  • All candy should be inspected by an adult before it is eaten. Any candy that is tampered with should be reported to local law enforcement immediately.
