Spectrum Bay News 9’s Katya Guillaume, also a member of the sorority, spoke with Bay Area members who reflected on this moment in history watching Harris take the oath of office as vice president. She said “the first ever female Vice President of the United States, doesn’t only look like me, we call her Soror."

Sylvia Blackmon Roberts, also a member of the sorority added, “I just can’t express how proud I am. As a black woman to see our first woman vice president, but does she happen to be black and of Asian decent.”

Another member, Dionne Holt, continued to say, “It’s so significant for many of us to have worked tirelessly to support just breaking glass ceilings throughout the years.”

Blackmon Roberts told Spectrum Bay News 9 she had the prestigious honor of meeting then Sen. Kamala Harris.

“Her resume, what she’s done, that’s an encouragement to women around the world,” she said. “It’s an example to girls who may think, 'I can now achieve that.'”

She added that the down to earth person we all see on TV is exactly who Vice President Harris is.

This moment in history is what many hoped for and what AKA’s say they always expected.

Holt added, “Since 1908, we’ve had a legacy of leadership and being the first of many levels so yes, we absolutely envisioned this.”

Blackmon Roberts finished by saying, “As Kamala said, she may be the first but she won’t be the last and I will tell you, I truly believe that.”

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated just celebrated their 113 year anniversary.
