When Donald Trump takes the oath of office Monday, he will officially assume the presidency — and with it, the responsibility of carrying out a wide array of promises made over his three years as a 2024 candidate.
Unlike 2017, this time, Trump will enter the White House with four years of experience under his belt, what he insists is a “mandate” from American voters after November’s election results and without the shadow of another reelection bid – and the political considerations one brings – hanging over his presidency.
Here is a list of actions Trump has committed to pursuing, Biden administration policies he has pledged to reverse and benchmarks he has promised to achieve in a second term.
Spectrum News will be tracking the progress of each and reporting back throughout his presidency term.
Immigration and the border
Perhaps no other topic has received more attention from Trump on the campaign trail than the U.S.-Mexico border and the country’s immigration policies. It is also an issue that has risen on the list of importance to voters and played heavily in the 2024 election. Here is what he has pledged:
Close the border and carry out the “largest mass deportation program in history.”
End birthright citizenship, the policy that automatically grants citizenship to any person born in the U.S., regardless of his or her parents’ legal status.
Restore the travel ban from his first term that barred people from five Muslim-majority countries as well as North Korea and Venezuela and expand it to include refugees from the Gaza Strip.
Foreign policy
On matters overseas, Trump has been clear about one particular promise:
Negotiate an end to the nearly three-year war between Russia and Ukraine within 24 hours of taking office, or even before he reenters the White House.
Economy and trade
Trump’s economic promises have ranged from general sentiments to ultra-specific policy proposals:
Bring down prices and “end” inflation.
Extend provisions in his signature 2017 tax cuts bill, many of which are set to expire at the end of the year.
End taxes on income workers make from tips, overtime pay and Social Security benefits.
Impose tariffs on imports from foreign countries, including a 25% tariff on products coming from Canada and Mexico and an even higher rate for Chinese goods.
Energy
On energy, he has one overarching goal and plans to reverse Biden policies:
Expand oil drilling in the U.S. and make America “energy dominant.”
Reverse Biden’s order setting a nationwide goal of 50% of all new cars and trucks sold being zero-emission by 2030.
Federal government
Trump’s incoming administration has made clear it wants to reduce the size and scope of the federal government:
Reduce regulations
Eliminate the Education Department
End federal spending on diversity, equity and inclusion, known as DEI, initiatives.
End protections for federal workers
Other
Here are some of the other things he has pledged:
Pardon at least some of the people charged with crimes for their participation in the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Ban transgender women from competing in women’s sports.
End federal funding to any hospital or health-care provider that performs gender-transition surgeries.
Ban gender-transition care for minors in “all 50 states.”
Leave abortion to the states and veto a national abortion ban should Congress pass one.
Repeal the Affordable Care Act and replace it with a better alternative.
