SARASOTA, Fla. -- More than 200 supporters of the Second Amendment were met with both cheers and backlash, as they rallied in downtown Sarasota on Saturday.

  • 2nd Amendment supporters rallied in Sarasota
  • Rally comes day after Trump's NRA speech
  • Supporters say they just want to be heard

The rally comes less than a day after President Donald Trump addressed a sold-out crowd at the National Rifle Association's annual meeting in Dallas.

This was the first time Trump had spoken publicly to NRA members since the shooting in Parkland that took 17 lives in February.

Trump assured those in the crowd that their Second Amendment rights would not be in jeopardy as long as he was president.

"It's nice to have some people in charge who still believe in American principals," said Joe Brower, who was waving a flag at the Sarasota rally.

Following the shooting in Parkland, Trump initially said he would consider expanding background checks and raising the age of purchasing rifles to 21. That is, after receiving pressure from many Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students.

He later backpedaled on some of those proposals.

"We need to put regulations on weapons to make sure they're harder to get, easily trackable, and that the CDC can actually research gun violence," student Cameron Kasky said, following President Trump's speech. "These are all things that should be no-brainers."

"These kids don't know what they're asking for," Brower said. "You know what they say, be careful what you wish for because you might just get it."

While gun reform is a hot topic, those at the rally Saturday remained peaceful.

Many say they just wanted to be heard while showing off their red, white, and blue.
