Charles Tenpenny is charged with aggravated assault and falsely reporting a crime.
Naomi Rosado, 18, who is 20 weeks pregnant, was shot Thursday afternoon and is in critical condition at the hospital. Investigators say Tenpenny first told them an intruder shot her during a home invasion.
Tenpenny now says he accidentally shot Rosado during a fight over a Facebook friend request and lied about an intruder breaking into their home.
While they were arguing, Tenpenny said he pointed a loaded handgun at her as she sat on the couch. He said he was trying to turn off the laser sight when he accidentally shot her. The bullet went through her hand and hit her in the eye.
Tenpenny called 911 and told authorities an intruder dressed in all black broke into their home, shot Rosado, and ran away, according to authorities.
Investigators said Tenpenny admitted to what actually happened when detectives responded to his home Friday after he tried to commit suicide.
Tenpenny told them he had the gun because he sells illegal drugs, but tossed over their fence behind the couple's home. Detective were able to recover the gun.
Tenpenny was arrested and charged with a $510,000 bond. A mental health evaluation was also ordered for him.
Tenpenny said he plans to hire his own attorney and will have another court appearance in 48 hours.
