TAMPA, Fla. — On Monday the Bucs began the first phase of their offseason training activities.

  • Phase One is two weeks
  • Limited to strength and conditioning
  • 90-minute max of on-field time

It's a new year, a new playbook, and a new motivation for the Bucs. New head coach Bruce Arians met with his team. There is a lot of confidence in the building.

One of the reasons is the message sent from Arians to the players.

"He just wants to win just like me," said Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans. "So, we have that in common and that is the main thing in this business. We all want to win. He is going to push us and hopefully lead us in that direction."

"This isn't a restart," said Bucs cornerback Vernon Hargreaves. "This isn't a rebuild. This isn't 'Let's take a year and see what we got.' This is win-now. And if you don’t want to win then you can go. There's a lot of others teams out there."

One player who could benefit the most from a coaching change is Hargreaves. Coach Arians was singing his praises last month at the NFL meetings in Arizona.

"Vernon has all the talent in the world," said Arians, who is entering his first season as Bucs head coach. "He is smart. There is no doubt he can be successful. He just needs to stay healthy."

Hargreaves (Wharton High alum) suffered a torn labrum in the first week of the 2018 season. He played in just one game and had surgery to repair his labrum. Now healthy, Hargreaves is happy to have his new head coach believing in him before ever sitting down for a one-on-one meeting.

"I love it," said Hargreaves. "He doesn't have to say that about me. He doesn't know me. But I love it, and that is that confidence that I need and that confidence that we need as a secondary. And we are excited. The whole group is."

Hargreaves is in line to play his more natural position of an outside covering corner in a 3-4 defense under defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. While Vernon says he will play anywhere the coaches need him, playing outside will take him back to his college days as a Florida Gator. That was when Vernon was the most confident as a player.

Confidence.

It might just be the most dominant word for the Bucs this offseason.
