HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Agencies across Florida are working to combat human trafficking during upcoming Super Bowls.
- Florida working to combat sex trafficking during Super Bowls
- Statewide Council working on action plan
- Sex Trafficking Task Force formed in Hillsborough
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody held a human trafficking council meeting Thursday at the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, where council members discussed ways to combat the sex trafficking problem centered around major events like the Super Bowl.
The council is also working on an action plan to better collect data on sex trafficking, which may also include an interagency surveillance plan. Funding is also a concern being discussed during the next legislative session.
Super Bowl LV is scheduled for February 7, 2021, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay.
The Hillsborough County Commission has already formed a human trafficking task force to help combat sex trafficking during the major event.
"Combating human sex trafficking and those who profit from the sex trade must be a shared priority by everyone in our community," Sheriff Chad Chronister said.
Members of the Clearwater-Tampa Bay Human Trafficking Task Force stated 169 arrests related to human trafficking were made during this year's Super Bowl in Atlanta.
"Super Bowl was not necessarily the source of the sex trafficking problem," the organization said. "It is simply an event that brings it all together in one concentrated place.
That's why the Statewide Council on Human Trafficking is trying to get ahead of the issue as we approach the 2020 Super Bowl in Miami and the 2021 Super Bowl in Tampa.
