TAMPA, Fla. — While he's certainly no stranger to volunteering in disaster relief, veteran Tampa Bay Red Cross volunteer Frank Hall is about to take part in something he's never been a part of before: earthquake relief.

“This one I guess what I’m anticipating is a lot of road damage, a lot of house damage,” Hall said.

Hall is the first Tampa volunteer to deploy for the disaster. An Orlando volunteer also left Thursday, and a volunteer from the Sarasota chapter left earlier this week.

The southern coast has been hit with a series of earthquakes for weeks now.

The strongest - a magnitude 6.4 shock that toppled buildings and schools over.

Hall will be sacrificing a lot of sleep for the next two weeks as he works to help those affected.

“I’ll be doing some logistics work, which is getting supplies, food, etc. down to shelters and tent cities and neighborhoods where folks don’t have power,’ he said.

The possibility of significant aftershocks is real. The latest one measured 5.2 on the Richter scale.

Despite this, Hall says he's not worried.

“Whatever happens, happens. Use common sense and due diligence and try to avoid danger, but if it happens it's affecting all them, so it’s going to affect us, as well,” he said.

As he left to the airport this afternoon, he said he's looking forward to one thing.

“There’s nothing that gives you more satisfaction than helping people when they’re in their greatest need,” he said.
