Are you a Tampa Bay native? If not, where are you from?

I have lived in Clearwater since 1979, when my parents decided to escape the Chicago area and the winters.

How would you describe your job or claim to fame?

I certainly don’t have a claim to fame! I have been mayor [of Clearwater] on two separate occasions, which I believe is a first in Clearwater, Mayor Greco did it in Tampa. My job is to serve the citizens of Clearwater and set policy, along with our city council, that will position the city for years to come. I also try to keep Clearwater in the mix regionally.

What’s your favorite Tampa Bay restaurant?

That is almost an impossible question because my wife Teresa and I have specific things that we love at different places. It used to be Cafe Ponte, Chris [Ponte, executive chef] is one of the most talented people in the region and in my opinion the country.

Do you have a personal Tampa Bay “secret spot” and/or “hidden treasure”?

The north end of Clearwater Beach is amazing—not many people go there, and it is tranquil.

What is your favorite Tampa Bay tradition?

Turkey Trot is just a great way to start Thanksgiving. After you participate you can eat guilt-free later in the day.

What’s one thing many people don’t know about you that you’re willing to share with us?

I am the youngest of six and a mistake, although my parents would never admit it. My siblings told me all the time.

If you could change one thing about the Tampa Bay area or your community specifically, what would it be?

I think we have made a lot of progress, but I would like to see more regional cooperation. We would be stronger as a region if we could do it.

What are you looking forward to doing most when it’s safe to resume public activity, so to speak?

Burning all my masks! Seriously, I look forward to being out with people without the worry of spreading the virus.

Clearwater is known as a tourist town, perhaps more so than Tampa or St. Petersburg. But Clearwater definitely has its own homegrown culture. What is something that visitors absolutely need to experience?

First, relax. Start with a grouper sandwich on the beach while watching a sunset over the gulf. A visit to see Winter the dolphin at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, followed by a concert at the Capitol Theatre. Not a bad start.
