CLEARWATER, Fla. — In the frantic moments after a small plane crashed into the Bayside Waters mobile home park Thursday evening, confused and scared residents rushed out of their homes to find flames and chaos.

The crash scene remained active on Friday morning as crews continue to assess damage. According to the FAA, the plane's pilot was killed, as were two people in the home on the ground.

Hours earlier, it had just gotten dark in the mobile home park when a large crash was followed by about seven minutes of panic across the park.

One resident rushed out to find flames at his door, another said upon inspection of her home, there was possible damage from the plane and fire.

Kathy Benton was one of the first residents to get to the crash scene.

She said she and her boyfriend did not just hear the crash but also felt it a block away.

"We didn't know what it was but we got in our golf cart and we just came around the corner and we could see a big fiery inferno,” she said. “(It) sounded like a crash. There were other people here, it was very upsetting to see.

“And I had heard, I didn't know for sure, but I had heard it was a single plane that had crashed."
