TAMPA, Fla. — Evelyn Cubias says she was getting a bite to eat before near Armature Works on April 9 before she headed out to watch her son play ball.

Instead, she was rushed to the hospital after being shot when an altercation between two groups of teens escalated to the point that shots were fired.

We’re learning more about one of the people who survived a shooting near Armature Works April 9th. Two teenagers, a 17 and a 19-year-old face several charges, including attempted murder in connection with that shooting.

“It’s scary that you can be alive one moment and then not be here, not go back — not go back home and hug your kids,” Cubias said, tearing up.

The mother of three says she was shot in the arm.

“It’s very painful,” Cubias said. “It just broke my arm into pieces."

Continuing to heal, she recently started physical therapy. And in search of additional support, Cubias said she turned to the Victims’ Resource Fair, a first-time event for the 13th Judicial Circuit Office of the State Attorney.

“We’re trying to find ways that we can help victims of crime and provide them resources,” said victim advocate Chris Jeffords. “We just want to bring a vision and ears for the victims, because they’re not heard like they should be.”

From crisis centers and counselors, to victim advocates and a variety of support services, Cubias says she appreciates the resources.

“It looks like there’s a lot of good things and good numbers I can keep in contact with," she said. "Some good programs that are available for me and my family."

“I’m just so thankful that I’m standing here right now," she added.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the shooting — a 17-year-old minor who is not being named due to their age, and 19-year-old Jaimartez Young. The 17-year-old was charged with attempted second-degree murder with a firearm and being a felon in possession of a firearm. 

Young was charged with first-degree attempted murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and discharging a weapon in public.
