NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. — You may have heard of Friendsgiving, a sort of play on words of Thanksgiving where friends gather over a meal, but one group of friends is going beyond the dinner table and is looking to give back to their community.

The unofficial fall tradtion is what sparked David Ishaq to start a charity event called Dress For Dignity, helping those impacted by recent hurricanes.

“We wanted to branch out from this Friendsgiving of just between us as a group and with our kids, to how can we make it right for our community,” he said. “It’s been going on for three years, but this will be the first year for this theme, for Dress for Dignity.”

Dress for Dignity, as Ishaq says, is aimed at providing professional clothing and resources to those in need. Helping attendees dress for interviews, internships and job opportunities.

“We wanted to give them something where they could wear and feel a certain level of strength and encouragement and support,” said Ishaq. “Not just from the community, but from within themselves.”

On Tuesday, Ishaq brought a load of donations to an American Veterans sit off Little Road, which will be handed out later this week.

“We wanted to not just show support to those that we don’t know, but to remind our friends that we still recognize you and acknowledge you and we see the struggle that you’re going through.”

What started as a gathering among friends, Ishaq says he hopes the event can expand into something greater.

“We do want to promote unity and to show the world that we do stand together in the hardest times and in the best of times,” he said.

This year’s Dress for Dignity will be held this Saturday at Sims Park off Grand Boulevard in New Port Richey.

Event organizers say they hope to reach one hundred attendees this year.
