TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. — Relief is on the way for parents and students concerned about speeding on a busy road in Temple Terrace.

Several schools, sports fields, a playground and a golf course are located near each other off Ridgedale Road, and now Temple Terrace officials are working to address those concerns by installing speed humps on the roadway by the end of the month.

  • Some residents say they have been concerned about increasing traffic and speeding on Ridgedale Road

That is welcome news for Kelly Kearney, the principal of Corpus Christi Catholic School on Ridgedale.

“There’s constant concern for student safety, family safety even," Kearney said. "There are a lot of families that walk across that street. Or just trying to get into school each day, in and out.”

Kearney said she has seen the amount of traffic and the speed pick up over the past seven years she has been at the school.

“It’s worrisome — we have a few bikers at our school," Kearney said. "We have had our own parents call us and say they’re real concerned about those bikers because it’s hard for them to get across the street with the speeders."

City Manager Carlos Baia said the several speed studies showed many drivers on Ridgedale Road going over the 25-mph speed limit.

“This is an area that you really need to look at the traffic to slow people down,” Baia said. “It’s a straight shot, Ridgedale Road is. Unfortunately, a lot of folks use it as a cut-through.”

The city also recently upgraded the flashing beacons in the school zones, Baia said.

At the Catholic school, Kearney said she hopes the changes can keep students and families safe.

“I’m all for any measures that we can take to keep our kids safe," Kearney said. "Speed humps would be fantastic. It has a tendency to slow speeders down, for sure.”
