“We’re proud of what we do. We are making a difference. We are lifting people up,” said Alvarez.
Alvarez is the founder and executive director of the Housing and Education Alliance, a nationally HUD-certified counseling agency based in Tampa. Through the organization, she leads first-time homebuyer education classes that are now more accessible than ever.
“Lenders are often covering the cost of the class now because it reduces their risk,” Alvarez explained. “Buyers need that certificate to qualify for better interest rates or to access down payment assistance programs.”
The course, primarily offered online, equips new homeowners with essential tools for long-term success. It covers everything from budgeting and credit management to avoid predatory lending.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Alvarez and her team helped more than 14,000 homeowners avoid foreclosure by providing critical information and support.
“It helps you understand the pitfalls, how to avoid them and how to build a secure financial future,” she said. “It’s about knowing what credit is, how it works and how to improve it.”
Alvarez remains committed to empowering individuals through education — helping them make informed decisions and inspiring a new generation of confident, knowledgeable homebuyers.
