The FHSAA has been crowning state high school football champions since 1963. The Bay Area has enjoyed it's share of state champs representing several of it's surrounding counties.

Pinellas County ranks as the sixth-most populated county in the state of Florida, and the biggest county left without a state high school football champion, but why?

"We've got so much talent around here, especially with all these schools around and I don't know why we can't get just one," says Clearwater Central Catholic senior defensive back Jerjuan Newton.

Clearwater Central Catholic is one of two teams left on the road to the state high school football championships and having an incredible season. They're currently undefeated heading into Friday's Regional Final match up with Berkeley Prep.

"It takes a whole lot of talent and a little bit of luck," says CCC head football coach Chris Harvey, and he should know.

Last season Harvey's Marauders carried a perfect record into the State Semi-Finals against Chaminade-Madonna and got beat 49-3. Madonna went on to win the State Championship, Harvey and his kids went back home.

This season there is a lot of confidence that CCC can finally hand Pinellas County it's first state championship. The Marauders returned several of their key players from last years final four squad, including quarterback Rory Hicks.

"You have to push yourself to be great," says the senior quarterback.  "Push yourself to try and get back to where we were last year and create a different outcome."

With a win on Friday, the Marauders would head to their sixth state final four in the last seven years.

"Eventually somebody is going to do it," says CCC Offensive Coordinator John Davis. Davis coached the Marauders for five years before Harvey, leading them to the school's only State Final appearance in 2013 against Trinity Christian.

"I told the kids, look, just enjoy the situation because this is what everybody in high school dreams of."

CCC hopes those dreams become reality. They may not be the biggest team left in the 3A bracket but they are one of the most experienced.

The other Pinellas county representative is Admiral Farragut.  The Blue jackets are 9-1 in Class 2A with a match up Friday against Seffner Christian.

Two chances to end a streak that has lasted 55 years.
