The incident happened at West Hillsborough Avenue and Elliot Drive Saturday night.

Officials said Deputy Jared Mincemeyer pulled a man over for having an obscured tag and asked him to get out of his car.

The man started to get out with a gun in his hand, according to investigators.

HCSO says Mincemeyer backed up and shot the man, who later died at the hospital.

"I can't tell you how much our training that we do all of the time, it kicks in in situations like this. It was completely unknown what he was walking into tonight, and it didn't matter because we were ready for it," said HCSO Col. Nikki Bosley.

The sheriff's office said this was Mincemeyer's first use of force since he was hired in 2022. They are planning to release the body cam footage once it is available.
