TAMPA, Fla. — When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers return to action Sunday at the New York Giants, they’ll do so against a new quarterback and with some reinforcements.
Daniel Jones’ tenure as the New York Giants’ starting quarterback is over.
What You Need To Know
- The Bucs (4-6) play at the New York Giants (2-8) Sunday
- The Giants benched starting quarterback Daniel Jones in favor of third-stringer Tommy DeVito
- Tampa Bay is getting injured cornerback Jamel Dean back in the starting lineup Sunday
The Giants benched the struggling 27-year-old on Monday, and coach Brian Daboll plans to start fan-favorite Tommy DeVito against the Buccaneers this week in an attempt to end a five-game losing streak.
Not only was Jones benched, Daboll said he will be the No. 3 quarterback for the final seven games, while fellow veteran Drew Lock remains the backup.
The Giants will have decisions to make as a second straight losing season is all but certain for the Giants (2-8).
The Bucs (4-6), meanwhile, are prepping for a stretch run that could still include a playoff push.
Tampa Bay, which hasn’t won a game since Oct. 13, has lost five of its past six, while ranking last in scoring defense and total defense in the NFL.
The Bucs’ beleaguered defense will get some help Sunday in the form of starting cornerback Jamel Dean, who has been out the past four games with a hamstring injury.
Dean was missed during the losing streak as the Bucs fell by one score in losses to the Atlanta Falcons, Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers.
Also, safety Mike Edwards, part of the Bucs' Super Bowl LV squad, has been claimed off waivers from the Tennessee Titans.
Tampa Bay remains in second place in the NFC South and is looking at a less intimidating schedule the rest of the season. Tampa Bay is still three games out of the playoffs wild-card race.
Outside of a Dec. 15 trip to play the Los Angeles Chargers, no opponent the rest of the way is above .500.
That includes three remaining division games against Carolina (3-7) and a season-finale at home vs. New Orleans (4-7).
