TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. — Much of the region is still recovering from hurricanes Helene and Milton. Several coastal communities, like Treasure Island, still look like a ghost town.

Many residents say they want answers after not being able to return to their homes in over two months.

The city of Treasure Island is hosting a town hall to offer residents with an overview of the permit process, progress and to address questions that were submitted by the public.

Those expected to attend include the city commission, property appraisers, and representatives from local legislators.

Some residents that are eager to get back into their homes are questioning the permitting process.

The Evans family are getting ready for holiday company, clearing out their vehicle to loan their visiting relatives. The truck was serving as an additional storage area while they rebuild after the recent storms.

“We had water up to four feet. All the drywall was wet, we lost almost everything in the house,” said Treasure Island resident Corey Evans.

He is looking to get more information about the rebuilding process during the town hall.

“It’s been very frustrating, a lot of the neighbors are very frustrated that the whole process is taking way too long,” Evans said.

The city says some questions submitted include: “What are fees to elevate a home?” “Can I elevate my home using fill?” and “How long does it take to get a permit?”

A lot of questions and frustrations, residents say, revolve around permitting and paperwork.

Evans wants clarification about a commission vote Tuesday, in regards to permitting after hurricanes.

“Just clarification that option two does mean you don’t need a substantial damage letter and you can get your permit. That’s the main clarification I want them to say, and last night, they supposedly passed that, but I want them to restate that again that that’s the truth,” Evans said.

The town hall will be held Dec. 18 at the Treasure Island City Hall Promenade Deck at 5:30 p.m.

The city says the town hall will be recorded so people can watch later.
