ORLANDO, Fla. - The stage is set for the return of a "Finding Nemo" show at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

​​​The show, officially debuting to the public Monday, has undergone changes since its run as "Finding Nemo: The Musical,” which was suspended in 2020 because of the pandemic shutdown.

Now called "Finding Nemo: The Big Blue....and Beyond," the show has been shortened to 25 minutes, down from the previous version’s 40-minute runtime.

The team behind the revamp sees the change as a positive.

“We think that’s a perfect length to tell this story and share it with audiences with young families and young children,” said James Wilson, show director with Disney Live Entertainment, before the preview performance. “And it allows them, all of our guests to go out into the park and experience the rest of the wonderful stuff here at Animal Kingdom.”

The story, adapted from the Disney-Pixar film “Finding Nemo” is now told from the point-of-view of the Tank Gang, which are now at the Marine Life Institute. The group of fish also serve as narrators that help move the story along from scene to scene.

Other changes include new set pieces, new lighting, and a new LED screen that serves as a backdrop for the show. The screen helps transform the stage into different settings.

Projections also add a little extra flair beyond the stage.

The new elements enhance the holdovers from the previous show, including the live puppeteers and the larger-than-life puppets that move around the stage.

Characters from the original show remain, including Nemo, Nemo’s overprotective father, Marlin, Dory, Bruce the shark and Crush the turtle. However, the shorter runtime means some characters were cut, including the “flying” penguins and Nigel the pelican.

The show’s musical numbers still include “In the Big Blue World,” “Just Keep Swimming” and “Go With the Flow,” among others.

Finding Nemo: The Big Blue...and Beyond is the latest entertainment offering to return to Disney World. Within the last year, the resort has brought back an updated Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and the Festival of Fantasy Parade at Magic Kingdom. Fantasmic! is scheduled to return sometime “later this year.”
