BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is now a certified autism center, the space-focused attraction announced Wednesday.

The complex partnered with the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) to receive the certification, which involves staff completing special training designed to help them better understand sensory-sensitive visitors and visitors with autism.

“This certification is just one way we are working to ensure that Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is accessible to each of our guests,” KSC Visitor Complex Chief Operating Officer Therrin Protze said in a statement. “The extensive autism sensitivity and awareness training our staff has undergone has already impacted the way we interact with all families and children of all abilities, but specifically those with autism and other sensory sensitivities.”

As part of the certification, KSC has placed sensory guide signs through the visitor complex that include ratings and information on how each area might impact sensory experiences. The complex has also designated specific areas as low-sensory areas, less stimulating areas where visitors with sensory sensitivities can take a break.

KSC has also updated its sensory guide with information about additional accommodations and options. It’s available on the visitor complex website, the mobile app or at guest services.

“IBCCES is honored to partner with Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex to help more families create treasured memories and enjoy all the amazing experiences the visitor complex has to offer,” IBCCES board chairman Myron Pincomb said in a statement.

Kennedy Space Center is the latest attraction in Central Florida to become a certified autism center, joining Legoland Florida Resort, SeaWorld Orlando and Aquatica Orlando.
