- Palmetto man has called deputies to say he thought he hit a deer
The crash happened just after 2:30 a.m. on the shoulder of U.S. Highway 19, near 49th Street East in Palmetto.
Investigators with the Florida Highway Patrol say the three people were on the side of the road when a white Chevrolet Silverado drove onto the shoulder, struck the three people, and kept going.
Tyler Pittard, 13, and a 47-year-old man were taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital, where they died.
A 40-year-old woman was critically injured and was taken to Blake Medical Center.
Both the man and woman are from Palmetto.
On Sunday morning, a Palmetto man called the Manatee County Sheriff's Office after he saw the story on the news. He told deputies he thought he had struck a deer, but he could have been involved in the crash.
Deputies, as well as FHP troopers, confirmed that his vehicle matches the description of the vehicle they were looking for. The vehicle is now in possession of FHP investigators.
At this point, it's not know whether the two adults in the crash are related to the boy. Authorities have not released their names.
A family member told Spectrum Bay News 9 that her father and his wife, along with his nephew and a close friend, were fishing by the bridge when they decided to walk to a nearby store. As they were walking, a pickup truck struck the wife, nephew, and the friend, according to the family member. The family member said her father was unharmed.
The family has not publicly come forward, but they urged anyone who has any information about the crash to speak up.
"A lot of people speed out here. There's a lot of accidents out here as well," said Colten Green-Clay, who works at nearby Skyway Bait and Tackle. "You can look at some of the markers and stuff. You can see where people have died from accidents over here.
"Drivers, they need to be extra cautious, because if we have another incident like this hit-and-run, it's not going to be good for this area," he said.
As of Sunday evening, the man who has come forward was not in custody and had not been charged. Troopers said he was cooperating with the investigation.
