HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. — The suspect in a shooting and fire in Hernando County is dead, sheriff's officials said.
Hernando deputies responded to reports of an active shooter after an altercation devolved into a barricaded subject late Friday night. According to deputies, Steve Roosa, 64, barricaded himself in a house near Erma Road and Star Road in Brooksville. Deputies attempted to identify whether or not Roosa was in his residence, and did so by using electronic surveillance to verify that he was in the house alone.
In a press conference shortly before 9 p.m. on Friday, Hernando Sheriff Al Nienhuis said that the situation was no longer a danger to those in the community and that the situation was resolved. He confirmed that at least two deputies fired at Roosa, and he was brought into custody.
Since the situation has been resolved, police allowed residents return to their homes nearby.
In a press conference, Nienhuis said two people were transported to a local hospital. He also said there is no threat to the local community. The fire that broke out on the scene has been contained.
