Portions of North 40th Street remain closed Friday morning while the Tampa Police Department and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigate the shooting.

The incident started at a nightclub late Thursday night and ended with an altercation between officers and a suspect near East 40th Street and Columbus Drive.

The incident started at Allusions Bar & Lounge on Busch Boulevard late last night. Someone called 911, saying a man with a gun fired shots from a gray Kia Soul.

A police helicopter spotted the car headed south on North 40th Street and officers tried to pull the car over.

When they did, the passenger got out and started shooting at the officers, striking their vehicle, officials said.

The officers then returned fire and shot the suspect, according to officials.

After being shot, the suspect jumped back into the car and sped off.

Moments later, the female driver pulled over and surrendered to officers. The suspect — who was the passenger — was pronounced dead at that time.

Tampa police officials have not released the names of the officers, but did confirm that they were not hurt and are on administrative leave as part of their standard procedure.

The suspect, who died at the scene, is only being identified as a 42-year-old man.

The female driver of the car will face charges, stated authorities.
