It is the largest high school the district has ever built at 265,000 square feet and located at 10650 County Road 672 in Riverview.

The school will service 9th-11th grade students for the first year and then add a senior class in the next school year.

Principal Dave Brown said it's been challenging to open the school during the pandemic.

"We're making that map as we go along. There's no map to follow. So the good news is, you can't mess up, right? We're going to work through it, we're going to make it happen," he said.

Brown said the biggest challenge has been getting supplies delivered on time.

"We were worried that we wouldn't have our seats in the auditorium by the first day but they got here. We are still missing a few things, some weight room equipment, some other things but we just have to roll with it," he said.

Over time, the school will have a total enrollment of about 2,800 students.

It cost an estimated $70 million to build and was funded by three years of impact fee collections.

"We are ready to welcome our students to this beautiful campus. I know our students and staff are excited to start rich, new traditions and build a lasting legacy for future students. We welcome the Sumner Stingrays to our district family," said Superintendent Addison Davis.

Hillsborough County Schools start all virtual on Monday, August 24 and campuses will open for students who chose the "brick and mortar" learning option on Monday, August 31.
