The state education commissioner says the district is in a financial crisis, and he wants a solution.
This comes at the same time the school board chairman has called a special meeting Friday to discuss the district's leadership.
Superintendent Addison Davis and his staff have been talking about the district's budget problems and their plans to fix it. But recently they've been coming under fire for jobs cuts.
Commissioner Richard Corcoran says finances in Hillsborough County Schools have reached a “point of crisis.”
He sent school officials a letter Thursday saying "the district’s lack of attention to this issue since 2015 has already created a disruption with your workforce, and your lack of comprehensive and timely action at present threatens the basic delivery of educational services to Hillsborough's students.”
He went on to say they need to take action to prevent the district from being taken over by the state.
Davis has presented a plan to try to balance the budget, but it does include eliminating jobs and consolidating programs.
In the past few days, about 100 teachers who are being let go say they were notified in a mass email.
Spectrum Bay News 9 spoke to a physical education teacher at one of the district's transformational schools who worries about what impact his leaving will have on his students.
"I built a relationship with them over the last two years and I'd give anything to get at least another year out of that,” said teacher Dylan Tibbetts. “They need positive role models in their lives and I want to be there for them and I don't want to leave them high and dry."
School board chairperson Lynn Gray has called a meeting for Thursday saying she has "new information" she wants to share. But she has declined to say exactly what it's about.
Davis told our partners at the Tampa Bay Times that he hasn't been told what the meeting is about either.
In statement to Spectrum Bay News 9, he said: “For the last nine months, I have shared publicly the critical state of the financial picture for HCPS. My leadership team has identified and implemented strategies that have helped to mitigate this crisis through staffing allocation cuts and other measures. These decisions have not been easy and I understand the community’s frustration and angst. We have done everything to minimize the impact on individuals, but I know that they have affected our teachers, students, families, and school-based administrators. All of this has been necessary to avoid a state takeover, and I look forward to working with the Board in the weeks and months ahead as we continue to improve and work in the best interest of our primary stakeholders – the students.”
As for the education commissioner, he says he wants a detailed financial recovery plan within 20 days.
The special board meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. No votes are planned, and no public comments will be allowed.
