HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections office has completed a recount for the millage tax referendum, with the canvassing board saying the count reveals that there will be no increase in pay for teachers for the next school year.
What You Need To Know
- Recount was for a property tax increase; would have given teachers a raise
- Canvassing board also recounted a second race for county judge group 14
- The official election results from Aug. 23 will be certified on Aug. 30
This recount was for a property tax increase that could have ultimately given school teachers a raise of up to $4,000.
Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Craig Latimer says the difference between those who voted “yes” and those who voted “no” was still .26%.
The recount was commissioned because state law requires a recount with machines if a vote margin for any candidate or issue is under .5%.
If that margin had been reduced to .25%, a recount by hand would have been requested.
For the school district property tax increase, only 590 votes separate the choices of “no” and yes.
"This does nothing but show how accurate the equipment is, how well the thing counts up and run through three tabulators, high-speed tabulators, in person voting and they’ve all come back here and have been fed through our automated auditing system, and then they're put through here again," said Latimer.
The canvassing board also recounted a second race for county judge group 14.
Mike Isaak and Melissa Black will move onto the general election in November.
Meanwhile, the official election results from Aug. 23 will be certified on Aug. 30.
