For photographers, many of whom practice their craft on top of their full-time jobs, it’s an opportunity to show for their passion.

For museum goers, it’s is a chance to look through the lens of Bay area photographers.

It’s the 2018 Member’s Show at the Florida Museum Photographic Arts, on display through August 31.

A hub for enthusiasts

The gallery is filled with still life, abstracts, travel pictures, land and cityscapes, animals and nature.

“I think it’s our service to community to create this space,” Zora Carrier, Executive Director, Florida Museum of Photographic Arts.

Seventy percent of the museum’s members are shutterbugs, and so the museum has become their hub.

“They exchange experiences, they exchange their secrets and they learn — that’s what’s most important. We offer a series of different workshops and courses,” said Carrier.

Prize winners on display

“Continuing Education” is the aptly named Grand Prize-winning photograph. It’s a shot of two older adults from behind, seated in a museum, taking in the art in front of them.

The People’s Choice winner, meanwhile, is called “Aftermath.” It’s a timeless reflection on the human form: a woman seated on the floor with her arms and legs in the light, crossed over her body, in black and white.

There is only darkness under her shoulders until a raised thigh emerges and puts the knee squarely in front of her body.

On it rests both her elbows. Under it, her other leg tucked in close to her body.

One hand cradles a shoulder, the other the top of her head as her face tilts down.

“We are still not done with all the options we can see and portray the human body in art,” said Carrier.
