DUNEDIN, Fla. — Pinellas County may be one of the most densely populated counties in Florida, but it still has its spots where nature reigns.
One of those is Honeymoon Island State Park and its two-and-a-half mile Osprey Nature Trail.
If you've never paid a visit, now might be a good time - the trail is currently home to a nesting pair of American Bald Eagles and their two eaglets!
Some good things to know before you go:
- Regulations stipulate protections must be in place for the nests. No one is allowed within 350 feet of the nesting tree, which is about three-quarters of a mile in on the east trail.
- Park rangers and bird watching groups keep watch over the nest and its inhabitants. In fact, the same bald eagle-watching group has been coming to this area of the Osprey Trail for about a dozen years.
- You'll also currently find on the trail a pair of great horned owls who are new parents, as well. Their owlet is about the same age as the new eaglets.
- If you go, best to bring some bug spray and a pair of binoculars
