Chita Rivera’s career took her across the world, but writer Patrick Pacheco says her fame never clouded how she treated people.

“You were the only person in the world. She wasn’t looking around to see if there was someone more important,” Pacheco said.

  • She earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor
  • The award was given to her by former President Barack Obama

Pacheco, who co-wrote Rivera’s 2023 memoir called "Chita, A Memoir," said not only did his co-author have a big heart, but she was a triple-threat: a singer, an actress and a dancer who broke barriers for Latinos.

“She was going to go through any door that was open, and if it wasn’t open, she was going to open it,” Pacheco said.

Rivera died Tuesday at age 91 after a brief illness.

She won three Tony Awards and amassed 10 total nominations.

One of her highest honors was getting the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. The award was given to her by former President Barack Obama.

“She was a tremendous talent," theater-goer Pearce O'Brian told NY1 Tuesday night.

At Tuesday night’s showing of "Chicago the Musical," people like O’Brian came out to remember Rivera.

“For everyone to be here tonight and kind of show their support says a lot about the theater community and that people still want to see live theater. It’s important,” said theater-goer Michael Rossitto.

Rivera starred in and originated one of the play's lead roles, Velma Kelly. O’Brian said he was honored to see Rivera perform in that role.

“Anybody who saw her was very blessed and very lucky to see her,” O'Brian said.

Amra-Faye Wright slid into the big shoes Rivera left behind, starring in the role of Kelly for more than two decades.

“I still feel like I’m just an imposter in this role, because she embodied this role so magnificently and so clearly that we can’t help but hear her voice every single performance,” Wright said.

Wright called Tuesday night’s performance bittersweet as the entire cast dedicated their performance to Rivera.

“We know she’s going to be up there showing the angels how it’s done. So it’s going to be a moving performance for us,” Wright said.
