POLK COUNTY, Fla. — Tucked away under aged-old oaks where the soft chirping of birds will lull you into comfort is a historical home, known as the Wonder House, with a fascinating history. A history that the home’s caretaker, Krislin Kreis, is bringing back to life for all to enjoy.
What You Need To Know
- Krislin Kreis has a passion for antiques and history
- She has restored the Wonder House, where she lives
- You can tour the Wonder House
Kreis first started working on the home when she purchases it eight years ago in 2015. Since then, she’s been renovating the home and restoring it to its former glory, something she’s had an interest in since she was a child.
“When I was just a little kid, I told my dad I wanted to restore historic homes and be an archeologist and live in a museum. Now I can cross two of those things off my list. But I have always had an interest in history. I love antiques and history and I delve into them in my free time,” Kreis said.
You can see that passion throughout the home which she has helped restore and furnish with unique pieces she’s found around the country at estate sales and antique shops as well as donated items.
The house itself was built in the 1920s by a German immigrant and inventor Conrad Shuck and you can still see things he designed and created specifically for the house to this day.
In fact, thanks to Kreis, you can even tour the Wonder House. She opens up the home for private guided tours that will take you through the home’s unique rooms and background on the history.
“It’s really just so fascinating to own a piece of history here in Bartow and be able to bring it back to life for people to enjoy,” Kreis said.
It’s a unique opportunity to explore a little piece of Bartow’s history with a lover of all things historic homes.
The Wonder House is open year-round with a variety of different tours and events. However, you must book ahead on their website as the owners live on site.
