PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — A project at a local elementary school teaches children to give back to the community.
- Two first graders raised more than $400
- They donated money to Humane Society of Pinellas
First graders Gwyneth Harrington and Sarah Wieder completed the project at Ozona Elementary School and chose to make and sell organic dog treats.
They raised $412.50 and donated the money to the Humane Society of Pinellas.
On Saturday, the girls visited the shelter with their families to see first hand where the money went.
"They did all the work themselves. They mixed all the ingredients out. They hand cut each one out," said Jennifer Harrington, Gwyneth Harrington's mom.
She went on to say, "We have told them that this is going to go toward medicine, or food, or dog treats or just maintenance of the shelter but for them to actually see all the dogs and pet them and they were so excited and so happy."
The girls said they decided to help the shelter for their project because they love dogs.
"They're really cute and they're playful," said Sarah Wieder.
"They lick my face and they're fluffy," said Gwyneth Harrington.
Her mother was pleased that the two first graders learned about what giving back really means.
"Our community is so sweet, our little Ozona community, and they love dogs and I think the girls have really learned that giving back is an amazing thing. And I think they'll do it in the future because this has really encouraged them," said Jennifer Harrington.
