A local organization made up of Rochester religious leaders and community alliance organizers were out on Tuesday, showing their support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
The Religious Leaders Caucus of the Rochester Alliance of Communities Transforming Society — or Roc/ACTS — were heard honking horns outside Rochester City Hall on Tuesday morning, calling for more investment into community and youth services in minority communities, and less into policing.
"The question often times around defunding the police is where does the money go?" asked First Universalist Church Reverand Lane Campbell. "Like, who makes those decisions? And in our opinion, the money should really go to the people, it should be reinvested into Black and brown communities. So when we talk about divesting in the police we also have to come up with a proactive budget that we're collaborating with other groups on."
Rev. Campbell says the next step in the group's campaign is to develop a budget with how money should be divested from the police department, and where it should go to help support the community.
