It was a huge moment at The Theater at Madison Square Garden last year, when Michael Smith of England won the U.S. Darts Masters.
Smith first started playing in his parents’ pub as a teenager.
“For a kid where I am from growing up, it’s an unreal feeling that I’m part of this now, part of the eight elite players who come to these arenas, try to grow the sport for the kids coming up,” Smith said.
The tournament, which is hosted by the Professional Darts Corporation, features the world’s best players. Professional darts is a sport that is popular around the world.
“The combination between entertainment and sports I think are phenomenal,” Michael Van Gerwen, a three-time world champion from the Netherlands, said.
Rob Cross of England is playing the tournament for the first time. He is quite aware of the sports and entertainment history in the building many consider the world’s most famous arena.
“I really got to pinch myself a bit. I’m not going to lie. It’s sort of a dream really when you come to the best place, where so many famous people have come over the years. It’s just truly amazing,” Cross said.
Second-ranked Peter Wright of Scotland is on the same page. He is hard to miss with his Mohawk hair style, and also goes by the nickname “Snakebite,” so he means business.
“To be invited as a dart player to an iconic place like this is amazing. Obviously it’s my second year, and the crowds were absolutely amazing last year and hopefully they are the same again,” Wright said.
Tickets for the U.S. Dart Masters are available through Ticketmaster and at the Garden, Radio City Music Hall and Beacon Theatre box offices.
