State lawmakers are still divided on how to approach several budget issues, including reforms to the state’s discovery law.
Discovery refers to the process of sharing evidence in criminal cases.
Defense lawyers say the reforms instituted back in 2019 have ensured that all defendants get access to evidence in their cases in a timely and fair manner.
But Gov. Kathy Hochul and prosecutors argue the current law is too restrictive. They say judges should have more discretion in deciding what evidence must be presented.
Judy Kluger, CEO of Sanctuary for Families, an organization dedicated to helping victims of domestic violence, joined “Inside City Hall” Tuesday to discuss why she agrees with changing the law.
Kluger is also chair of the coalition “New Yorkers for Fair and Just Discovery Laws” and previously served 25 years as a state judge.
