Good morning, Texas. Here's what you need to know today.
Your Weather Planner
We’ve got another brutal day of critical to extreme fire danger, just without the widespread red flag warnings. We’ll start the day with milder temperatures in the mid-50s, sunshine and a southerly breeze. Winds will remain southerly and ramp up to between 15 and 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph. Relative humidity will once again drop to between 5% and 15%, further enhancing already dry fuels on the surface. Outdoor burning should be avoided at all costs. More fire danger is expected on Wednesday before we cool down for the first day of spring on Thursday.

1. 2 people arrested, accused of performing abortions near Houston
A midwife has been arrested for allegedly providing abortions in the Houston area, according to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Maria Margarita Rojas has been charged with the illegal performance of an abortion, a second-degree felony, as well as practicing medicine without a license. Paxton alleges that Rojas illegally operated at least three clinics where illegal abortion procedures were performed.
2. In Texas, Christian right grows confident and assertive
Last month, a Texas Senate education committee advanced bills that would require the Ten Commandments to be displayed and allow school districts to set aside optional prayer time. Throughout those hearings, lawmakers and bill supporters frequently said that church-state separation is a myth and argued that many of America’s ills are the consequence of removing Biblical morality from classrooms.
Longtime scholars of the Religious Right say the statements are setting a new, more strident tone. Experts say the shift is reflective of recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions, the second Trump administration and the broader normalization of Christian nationalism in the GOP.
3. Proposed bill would eliminate Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
A bill filed in the Texas House would dismantle the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission.
House Bill 4938 was introduced by state Rep. Pat Curry, R-Waco. If passed, the bill would redistribute TPWD’s responsibilities among three state agencies: the General Land Office, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Public Safety.
