It’s a case that has stumped investigators in several counties for nearly a year.

Two women went missing from Plant City last December and haven't been seen since.

Within the last 24 hours, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s detectives have gathered what could be considered new evidence in the case.

Doris Carter, 62, and Kelly Moriarty, 38, was a couple for four years but in an instant seemed to vanished. Officials now say they are missing and presumed dead.

"It's been 10 months since my sister's death," said Brenden Moriarty, Kelly’s brother, as he spoke with Bay News 9 Friday night, in times at tears.

It was on Thursday, Hillsborough County Sheriff's detectives, who are now spearheading the investigation, searched Carter's Plant City home.  They say they collected what could be evidence that may help them in the case.

"We hope that whatever it was that they found yesterday actually leads them to whoever it was that murdered my sister," Moriarty said.

Officials say Moriarty and Carter left Carter's Plant City home back on December 17th in Moriarty's car and haven't been seen since.

Ten days later, what was later determined to be Moriarty's severed leg, washed up in St. Petersburg.  The leg, officials say, had only been in the water for two days.

Detectives say that means she was killed sometime between the day she left Carter's house and Christmas day.

Morarity's abandoned car was later found in Manatee County a few days later.  It was searched but officials say there was no sign of foul play.

"I don't know why it happened but we'd at least like to know what happened and who did it," Moriarty said.

A sense of closure for a family torn apart by what many call a grizzly crime.

"We want to know who murdered and butchered my sister. That person is still out on the streets and it could be your mother, your sister, could be anybody's mother or sister that they do it to next. We certainly don't wish that upon anybody but a murderer is still out on the streets and that's been the most frustrating part to us," said Moriarty.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s detectives are now analyzing the possible evidence they took out of Carter’s Plant City home. No word on when they will have the results of those tests.

Moriarty says he and his family have written letters to local law enforcement all the way up to the governor asking for help. They've also put out flyers and offered a $5,000 reward for anyone with information.
