The City of Orlando started construction on the new arena in January 1987.  Construction was completed and the facility opened in 1989.

The last day of operation for the arena was held on September 30, 2010.

During the facility's 21 years of operation, the arena changed names a number of times.

Orlando Arena (1989 - 2000) - The building was first known as the Orlando Arena. The arena originally seated 15,291 but all the original seats were replaced with narrower ones between 1994 and 1995, increasing capacity by over 2,000 to 17,519.

TD Waterhouse Centre (2000 - 2006) -  The city of Orlando allowed the Magic to see the naming rights to the arena as part of the teams lease extension. In 1999, TD Waterhouse bought the naming rights for $7.8 million for five years.

Amway Arena (2006 - 2010) - On December 7, 2009, Amway announced they would become the new sponsor at a cost of $1.5 million over 4 years.  Magic owner Rich DeVos is also the founder of the Amway company.
