A woman police say stabbed her husband to death during an argument early Tuesday in St. Petersburg has been arrested, police said.
Sharon Byrd, 46, called St. Petersburg police from a lawyer's office on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North just after 1 p.m. and said she wanted to turn herself in, police say.
Officers went to the location and took her into custody without incident.
Police say around 2 a.m., Byrd, 46, was drinking with her husband, Russell Byrd, 44, and friend Juan McQueen at the Osprey Point Apartments on the 1700 block of 57th Terrace South. An argument began when Russell Byrd picked up the phone to talk to a woman who, although not known to all at the time, was his sister.
"She started inquiring about who he was talking too. He was dismissing her, I guess, not giving her the attention she thought he deserved and at that they started arguing," said St. Petersburg Police spokesperson Mike Puetz.
Investigators say that as the argument became more heated, Sharon Byrd threatened to kill her husband. Then, she walked into the kitchen, picked up a knife and stabbed him.
Juan McQueen says he saw the stabbing happen.
"So she grab the freaking knife and I'm thinking she's faking like she's going to hit him you know how you hit something and the you, like twist it around?" said McQueen. "She hit him for real. He fell back and when he fell back he said, 'Juan, she got me.'
McQueen called 911 and attempted CPR, but Russell Byrd stopped breathing. Sharon Byrd fled the residence and went to a relative's house in Manatee County, police said.
On her way to jail, Byrd said she still has feelings for her husband.
"I love my husband," she said.
Byrd will be charged with second-degree murder.
