TAMPA -- The new JW Marriott in downtown Tampa will begin to rise Tuesday.

Groundbreaking took place Tuesday morning on Tampa's first JW Marriott as Phase One continues on Water Street Tampa, the redevelopment project that will transform the southern edge of downtown Tampa.

The JW Marriott will be adjacent to Amalie Arena.

The 26-story hotel will feature 527 rooms, a roof-top bar, a spa and gym and ground-level restaurant. Construction is slated to be completed by 2020.

The Water Street Tampa redevelopment is being conducted by Strategic Property Partners, a joint venture between Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik and Cascade Investment, a firm owned by Microsoft founder Bill Gates.

The 50-acre project also will include the renovation of the Tampa Waterside Marriott, a University of South Florida downtown Tampa medical school and residential, retail and commercial space.
