"It's the very top, the very crest of the dome, because that's where the metal was the thinnest,” said longtime resident Bob Grant, who came up with the idea for the keepsakes.
Grant said he was watching the tower’s demolition, and while looking at the rubble thought of a piece of the Berlin Wall he bought years ago.
"I was sitting across the street watching them work,” said Grant. “And the wall occurred to me, and I said, 'I wonder if we can get a piece of that tower.'"
With help from the Seminole Kiwanis Club, Grant got more than just a piece. They were able to get their hands on enough to make dozens of commemorative squares.
Grant said the pieces are more than just keepsakes, but rather a connection to the past.
"We were young, our children were just being born, we were starting out in business,” said Grant. “It was the beginning of a lot of things."
