Law enforcement agencies from across the country are seeking the expertise of a Tampa company for help in how to use drone technology.

Tampa-Based Flymotion Unmanned Systems has signed contracts with several police departments and sheriff’s offices to teach officers and deputies how to operate the aircraft.  The company will also help some of those agencies without an aviation unit create one.

CEO Ryan English, who helped launch Flymotion four years ago, said the technology has evolved and the negative perceptions associated with drones have disappeared.

“It was, kind of the word "drone" -- there was some negative connotation to it,” said English. “We recognized as a company that eventually that would change.”

Earlier this month, Flymotion was contacted by Jacksonville first responders to assist in the search of a missing 9-year old girl.

A team with the company provided surveillance and mapping technology, pinpointing the location of the child. She was found safely after 18 hours.

It was the first time Jacksonville authorities in that area used a private company to help with a search.

An estimated 900 police and sheriff’s agencies nationwide use drone technology.
