ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — We are watching a tropical disturbance in the Caribbean. Some development is likely as it moves north and into the Gulf Monday.

  • Watching tropical system
  • Rain chances increase Sunday
  • Highs in the low 90s

Tropical Storm Watches and Warnings have been issued for Western Cuba and parts of the Yucatan of Mexico. It could be a tropical storm in the southern Gulf on Monday.

Marine forecast: ENE wind 10-18 knots. Seas 2-3 feet. Bay and inland waters a light to moderate chop. There is a small chance of showers or a storm later in the day.  Boating is not recommended from Tuesday through midweek.

It will be mostly clear into morning.

Low temperatures will be in the low to mid 70s Tampa Bay to upper 60s north.

An area of high pressure remains to our north keeping the east wind going through Sunday.

On Sunday, the morning will be dry but the rain chance increases to around 30 percent in the afternoon.  A few showers and maybe a storm will move west across the state in the afternoon. Skies will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy. It will be breezy with east winds. High temperatures will again be 90 to the low 90s in the afternoon.  Some high clouds will move in during the afternoon.

Monday will start out similar. It will be breezy with east winds. The morning will be comfortable, but the afternoon will bring above-normal temperatures and a slight uptick in the dew points. Skies will be partly sunny to mostly cloudy. Moisture builds overhead, so the coverage of rain will increase. Scattered showers and some storms will move west across the state in the afternoon to early evening.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the humidity will move up. Showers and storms may start earlier in the day. With a possible tropical system in the Central Gulf, rain chances will be higher. It will be breezy.

The disturbed weather in the Western Caribbean will move into the Gulf of Mexico on Monday, possibly as a tropical storm.

This system is expected to move north through the Gulf and make landfall along the northeast Gulf Coast.  Rain chances for us will be high Tuesday through Thursday, especially closer to the Gulf coast. This potential system is being monitored.

Through the work week, rain chances will stay elevated. High temperatures will be in the upper 80s. Lows will be in the upper 70s. It will be humid, mostly cloudy and breezy, with higher winds expected for the coastal areas and over the Gulf.  Some higher than normal tides will be possible Wednesday through Friday, and there will be a risk of rip currents.
