TAMPA BAY — The Tampa Bay area, and for that matter all of Florida's students and teachers, can expect one constant reminder of 2017-2018 in the new year: more school lockdowns and active shooter drills.

A new study by The Washington Post found that more than four million students were affected by lockdowns in the 2017-2018 school year. The study also found that lockdowns peaked in the two weeks following major events such as the Parkland shooting on February 14, 2018.

On the second Friday following the Parkland shooting, law enforcement across the country responded to 33 incidents, leading to 67 lockdowns that affected more than 50,000 students, according to the report.

That same week in the Tampa Bay area there were two school lockdowns in Manatee and Pasco County schools. The Friday following the Parkland shooting saw six lockdowns.

The Parkland incident led in great measure to the passage of the Marjorie Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Act. That measure, in part, mandates frequent active shooter drills as part of law enforcement's response to the problem.
