MELBOURNE, Fla. — There are worried neighbors in one Brevard County community after coyote sightings around the area.
- Several sightings of red coyotes in Windover Farms
- Resident believes cat was killed by them
- Coyotes are in all 67 Florida counties
One resident who lost a cat wants locals to be very cautious.
Neal Stein showed us where his beloved cat Daisy was killed near his driveway.
"The next day my daughter came home from her summer job late at night, and saw coyotes out by the road, and kind of put two and two together," Stein said.
Neighbors in the Windover Farms neighborhood in Melbourne report several similar red coyote sightings, and others speak of missing cats too.
"Certainly when people encroach in their habitat, you're going to have conflicts like this," said Stein.
He also snapped a photo of a bobcat recently lurking near his property. Those animals are also being seen by local residents.
Stein rides his bike around the area and encounters all kinds of wildlife. He just wants to make sure others don't lose pets like his family did.
"We aren't mad at the animals, that's what they do," said Stein. "It's just an unfortunate situation. People need to be cautious."
Per the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, coyotes have been reported in all 67 Florida counties. Feeding them is illegal, and after a period of time they will lose their fear of humans.
