ORLANDO, Fla. — A JetBlue aircraft landed safely at Orlando International Airport on Wednesday morning after fumes were reported in the cockpit, officials said, with one passenger saying the pilot had the "fortitude" to think of others on the plane.

  • 2 passengers asked to be checked for possible fume inhalation

JetBlue says the plane was diverted after an odor was detected. Airport spokeswoman Carolyn Fennell said flight 198 was heading to New York's LaGuardia Airport when fumes started to come out of the cockpit area.

A passenger said that the pilot alerted the flight of "dangerous fumes" on the plane.

The plane landed safely, though two passengers asked to be checked for possible fume inhalation as a precaution, Fennell said.

Orange County Fire Rescue worked to help the two passengers who believed they were exposed to harmful fumes on the Jet Blue flight.

No passengers had to wear oxygen masks during the incident, officials said.

Passenger Glen Gilzean said it was about 40 minutes into his flight to New York when a pilot made the announcement that the jet was turning around because of the fumes.

"You don't want to hear 'fumes' on a plane," Gilzean said.

The aircraft was already off the coast of Florida, according to flight tracking site FlightAware, when the pilots decided to return to Orlando.

"Thank God the captain had the fortitude to make sure that the safety of all the passengers on the plane was priority No. 1," Gilzean said.
