TAMPA, Fla — The blast of extreme cold buffeting the U.S. upper Midwest is causing flight delays and cancellations nationwide.

Tampa International Airport has had at least a dozen flights in and out affected over the last several days.

Amy Wiesenhart and her fiance, Craig, waited for hours with their 10-month-old daughter, Harper.

The couple is getting married over the weekend. They were waiting for friends and family to fly in from North Dakota to be part of the celebration.

"They're in the wedding, so we really need them here," Wiesenhart said.

She said the flight was delayed.

"They were supposed to be here 3 hours ago but it was too cold to de-ice the plane," Wiesenhart said.

Passengers not getting much help

Mark Redmond and his girlfriend said they'd been trying to get back to Chicago since Tuesday.

The couple said their flight was canceled, and now they have to wait until Friday to leave.

"I understand the weather is the weather. We can't go out there and yell at the weather and say 'Get warm,' but what the airlines can do is try to help," Redmond said.

He was frustrated because he said they hadn't been offered any kind of help with food or lodging.

The couple said they were low on money, so they planned to stay at the airport until they can fly home.

"Maybe this is one of those things, a time for me to see how strong I really am," Redmond said.

Winter weather is expected to impact travel for the rest of the week.

Make sure to check your flight status ahead of time if you're traveling to or from any of the major airports in the Tampa Bay Area.
