PINELLAS PARK, Fla. — A Pinellas County veteran has made it his mission to inspire, motivate and strengthen fellow Wounded Warriors throughout the Bay area.

On Wednesday, the Wounded Warriors Abilities Ranch, led by Marine Corps Veteran Michael Delancey, unveiled a new pavilion at the veteran focused park.

The pavilion was funded by the Armed Forces Families Foundation.

Delancey was shot and critically injured by a sniper while serving in Iraq in 2006. He is now in a wheelchair but has never let his disability define him.

He has made it his mission to help fellow veterans in need.

"It's all about camaraderie, getting them out of the house feeling better," Delancey said. "And when you're working out, it sort of has that natural tendency to get rid of that depression."

The Wounded Warriors Abilities Ranch is a non-profit organization and city park that is 100 percent wheelchair accessible. It features everything from fitness equipment to a multi-purpose court and wide hand cycle trails.

"Showing them that they can still play sports and do things they loved to do before they got hurt, that gets them out of the house and not staring at the wall with depression and gets them out in the community," Delancey said.

Since 2006, the Armed Forces Families Foundation has raised and given back more than $2 million to fund and develop infrastructure projects that help families of our service men and women.

"They might have a loved one that's gone for a year or more or maybe never comes home," said Niki Austin of the Armed Forces Families Foundation.

The Wounded Warriors Abilities Ranch is located at Lurie Park in Pinellas Park. For more information, click here.
