As the dome begins to close on Saint Raphael, Nicholas, and Irene Greek Orthodox Church, parishioners are reminded of their heartbreak that turned into hope.
"I can only say one thing: it's the work of God. It's God's grace. This is a miracle and continues to be a miracle," Church Administrator Erine Koulianos said.
In place of the old church structure, a 55-foot-tall basilica-style structure now stands. Every inch built by the hands of Greek craftsmen, the new church is the start of a new chapter and coincides with the arrival of a new priest from Greece.
"The building of the church represents the beginning of the future of our community," Father Marius Buzatelu said.
Church leaders said the future is filled with promise. They see the congregation and community enjoying the church for generations.
"People will have a place to come to a place of refuge, a place of truth, and a place of love," Koulianos said.
The one-of-a-kind marble floors and 10-inch thick walls will permanently enshrine the holy relics of the saints, which were among the few items spared in the fire.
The new church will also serve as a hurricane shelter. Church leaders hope to have construction completely finished later this summer.
